Open Pottery Studio - May Registration

Welcome to Galerie Acanthus Gallery's new Open Pottery Studio! We are so excited to open this space where our community can get creative!

There are no instructors in our Open Pottery Studio; this is a place where potters can get creative in their own time and practice what they have learned in class. For this reason, we require participants to have prior pottery experience to register for the Open Studio.

Interested, but new to clay? Send us an email at acanthusgallery@gmail.com so we can plan a slab intro workshop.

Please carefully read the following details about our Open Pottery Studio before registering.

Schedule:

For the month of May, the Open Studio will be open two days a week: Mondays and Wednesdays. This will be during the normal operating hours of the Gallery, as well as for a few hours in the evening. At least one Gallery attendant will be present during these times if you require assistance or have any questions.

  • Mondays: 10:00am - 4:00pm; 6:00pm - 9:00pm
  • Wednesdays: 10:00am - 4:00pm; 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: Galerie Acanthus Gallery – 136 Church Street, Grand Falls, NB (enter by side door)

Fee: $158

What's included:

  • 12 hours of access to the Open Studio
  • 10 kg of clay
    • An additional 10 kg of clay can be purchased for $38 extra
  • Use of studio tools (slab roller, pin roller, banding wheel, etc.)
  • Glazes
  • Bisque and glaze firings (these are done by Gallery attendants outside of Open Studio hours)
    • Maximum number of pieces per firing cycle: 3 mid-sized pieces
  • 2 square feet of shelf space in the studio

Studio Guidelines:

  • Experienced potters only: This is not a pottery class. Because there are no instructors in our Open Studio, participants need to have at least some pottery experience to register. If you have taken a pottery class at the Gallery before, you qualify for registration. Experience from outside the Gallery is also sufficient, so long as you can demonstrate basic pottery skills. Want to try it out but have no experience? Send us an email at acanthusgallery@gmail.com so we can plan a slab intro workshop.
  • Cleaning up: Clean-up is mandatory in the Open Studio. You must thoroughly clean your work station after you are done. If you are staying until the Open Studio closes (4:00pm in the day; 9:00pm in the evening), clean-up must start at least 20 minutes before closing time.
  • Use of hours: For the month, you have 12 hours of access to the Open Studio, whenever you decide to drop by. There will be a sign-in/sign-out sheet at the studio to track your hours. Unused hours do not carry over to the next month (June): you must use them all before the end of the month.
  • Non-transferability: Your pass to the Open Studio is yours and yours only—it is not to be transferred to anyone else. Someone else cannot use the studio on your behalf.
  • Size of pieces: Be mindful of the size of your pieces. The maximum size for any piece is 12 inches in width and 12 inches in height. Consult us if you wish to make a larger piece, as we will try to be as accommodating as possible.
  • Outcome of pieces: Pottery has a mind of its own, and pieces may not turn out as expected. They may warp, crack, or break during kiln firings. The Gallery is not liable if this happens. Gallery attendants also reserve the right not to fire pots that are deemed unsafe for the kiln.

By registering, you acknowledge and agree to follow these guidelines.

Good to Know:

  • Long hair and nails do not go well with clay! If you have long hair, it is recommended that you tie it. You may also want to give your nails a trim.
  • Bisque and glaze firings will be done by Gallery attendants outside of Open Studio hours, so you do not have to worry about operating a kiln. All you have to do is leave your pieces on the shelf, and we will take care of firing them for you. Firing schedules are not fixed yet; final dates to come.
    • Tuesdays: Bisque firing (non-official)
    • Thursdays: Glaze firing (non-official)

Refund Policy:

If you have not used any of your 12 hours, a full refund can be made.
