Have you always wanted to learn how to create pottery on the wheel? This beginner-friendly course is the perfect introduction to wheel throwing!
Each class is 3 hours long, including clean-up time. Participants should expect about 2.5 hours of pottery work, with the final 20-30 minutes reserved for cleaning and closing procedures. Participants will learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, trimming, and finishing pottery pieces while creating mugs, bowls, plates, and other functional forms.
No previous experience is required.
Instruction will be provided by Owen Comeau, a fine ceramic artist with extensive knowledge in pottery and ceramics.
Week 1 – Introduction & Wheel Throwing
Meet your instructor, review studio guidelines, and watch a live demonstration of basic wheel-throwing techniques. Then it's your turn to get your hands muddy and start creating! Time is reserved at the end of each class for studio clean-up.
Week 2 – Developing Your Throwing Skills
Continue practicing on the pottery wheel while improving your centering, pulling, and shaping techniques. Build confidence and consistency as you create new forms.
Week 3 – Trimming & Surface Decoration
Learn how to trim your pieces to refine their shape and add decorative details. This is your final wheel session and an opportunity to perfect your creations.
Week 4 – Waxing & Glazing
The finishing stage! Explore our selection of studio glazes and experiment with colours and surface designs to make your pieces uniquely yours.
Glazed pieces will be ready for pickup approximately one week after the final class. Unclaimed work must be collected within three weeks, after which it will be placed in our Pottery Adoption Program.
Upon registration, participants must select either Group A, B, C, or D. Enrollment is for the complete four-week session, and participants are expected to attend the classes associated with their selected group.

Instruction language: Our instructor, Owen, is only able to instruct in English.
Arrival and departure: Participants may arrive up to 10 minutes before class begins, but must leave on time at the scheduled end of the session.
Outcome of pieces: Pottery has a mind of its own, and pieces may not turn out as expected. They may warp, crack, or break during kiln firings. The Gallery is not liable if this happens. Gallery attendants also reserve the right not to fire pieces that are deemed unsafe for the kiln.
Sign up online or in person at the Gallery. Purchase of the workshop confirms your registration and secures your spot.
