Description

In this special two‑part workshop, you’ll discover the pottery wheel and learn how to glaze your own piece. It’s the perfect introduction for anyone who wants to try wheel‑throwing and experience the full process from clay to finished pottery.

During the first session, you’ll create several pieces and select one favourite to keep. During the second session, you’ll return to glaze your piece yourself using one of our studio glazes. Our team will then fire it for you, and it will be ready for pickup in approximately 3–4 weeks.

No previous experience is required.

Instruction will be provided by Owen Comeau, a fine ceramic artist with extensive knowledge in pottery and ceramics.

What to Expect

This workshop is all about the experience. Wheel‑throwing takes practice, and every potter begins with wobbly pieces. Be patient with yourself, enjoy the process, and have fun exploring clay.

Each session is 2 hours, for a total of 4 hours across two dates. A reservation is required to secure your spot.

How the Workshop Flows

Part 1 — Meet the Wheel

We begin with a demonstration on how to use the pottery wheel. Then it’s your turn to throw! You’ll have time to practice, explore, and create. At the end of the session, you’ll choose one piece to keep.

There will be time reserved for clean-up at the end of class. Participants are responsible for cleaning their wheel and workspace.

Part 2 — Glazing Session

You’ll return the following week to learn how to trim your pieces to refine their shape and glaze your selected piece. Our staff will fire it afterward, and it will be ready for pickup in 3–4 weeks.

Dates & Times

For the days you choose, you may choose between the morning time slot (9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.) or the afternoon time slot (1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.). You must attend the same time slot for both parts. Each time slot is limited to four participants maximum.

Workshop A — July 21 + July 28

• 1. Mornings: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. 

• 2. Afternoons: 1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Workshop B — July 23 + July 30

• 1. Mornings: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

• 2. Afternoons: 1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Additional Guidelines & Important Information

• Instruction language: Our instructor, Owen, is only able to instruct in English.
• Registration is valid for one time slot only (morning or afternoon).
• Participants may arrive up to 10 minutes before class begins and must leave at the scheduled end time.
• Pottery outcomes vary. Pieces may warp, crack, or break during firing. The Gallery is not liable for kiln‑related damage.
• Staff may decline to fire pieces that are unsafe for the kiln.
